It took me two days to recover. What kind of world are we living in where KStew shows up looking FLAWLESS and SJP, Diane Kruger, Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet, and every other woman I love to love looks like some trick-ass hoe who never made it past the parking lot at her highschool prom? SERIOUSLY.

Ugh. Anyways, I will say, however, that the 2010 Oscars were characterized by shock and awe (or, in most cases “aww”) and this post shall be delineated thusly.

SHOCK: The Dude wins big and we all celebrate with white russians! AWW: The director of Point Break wins! and somewhere, far away, Bodhi smiles down on us.

SHOCK: Cameron Diaz wears Armani Privé and looks stunning.

AWE: Zoe Saldana wears Givenchy and makes ombre lovable again!

AWW? : Poor thing. Didn’t anyone tell her? I know she’s just being Miley but come on Lesley—you let her out of the house like that? Homegirl’s Jennifer Packham outfit is two sizes too small and it ain’t doin’ nothin’ for that Nashville hunch. Just saying.

I know I’m not alone! Who shocked/hurt/traumatized you? Who’s still puzzling on Carey Mulligan’s outfit—is it the shoes? is it the dress? Robert Downey Jr. wearing John Lennon glasses at kicks?! Irreverent or just plain stupid?

The questions are endless! Give me some piece of mind!

BLVD.’s opening on Newbury Street last summer was like a grand proclamation to the typical Newbury fare (you know who i mean) that Newbury isn’t just for Chanel and Serenella devotees anymore. The skate shop-cum-art gallery is a haven for local artists and when I look at Chris Villano it’s hard to miss the Jeffrey Deitch spark in his eye. We can’t get enough of it. Curiouser and curiouser about the man behind all that dynamism? Behold, Alice, Chris Villano’s Notes on Style:

INCORPORATE ART. We try to find artists that tie in with the store’s scene and the majority have come from Boston. Most of the artists we showcase are related, somehow, to skateboarding, fashion, or music. Our most recent show featured the artist, ‘Bigfoot’, who is heavily involved in the skateboarding community and in the past we’ve also hosted Mikey Welsh from Weezer. Now, Mikey’s one of my favorite painters. I met him a few years ago through a friend who had a gallery down in Newport, Rhode Island and kept in touch with him over the years. His paintings express him so well and that style matches my personality. He’s working on a shirt for BLVD. and possibly a mural. We’ve always been big into art and having the opportunity to showcase at the store is an amazing experience. We couldn’t be happier.

MIX FASHION, FORM AND UTILITY. Vans shoes are always going to be in the mix but in the past few months I’ve been wearing Gravis’s new skate line. Their footwear is a mix between fashion and skateboarding. They incorporate a lot of different materials like wax canvas and leather. It’s good to see companies doing something different—making a skate shoe that’s slim and stylish as opposed to the classic “chunky” skate shoe.

BE PASSIONATE AND DO IT YOURSELF. Overall, I think a big part of my style definitely comes from skateboarding. I haven’t had a pair of shoes that wasn’t from a skateboard brand since the 3rd grade. I’ve always been heavy into the skateboard culture and not much has changed since I was a kid. Style is what you make of it. People may not be into it but that’s why it’s your style, not theirs.

TAKE CUES FROM THE PAST, BUT LOOK TO THE FUTURE. I get my inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. I like seeing different styles and influences and then turning them all into one. I’m really into vintage clothing and having something that nobody else can really find. I know when I buy something at the bigger shops around here I’m always running into people wearing the same thing. I don’t buy a lot of clothing anymore for this reason. Insight and Altamont are my two favorite clothing brands. Most of Insight’s collections are ahead of the game. Being from Australia, their fashion sense is quite different. I like brands that really go the extra mile on their own terms. Most brands take what the “cool” thing is at the moment and focus on it until it’s overplayed. Altamont sticks to their roots as a skateboarding brand and is heavily influenced by vintage and retro designs. Their slogan “cut from a different cloth” tells you what they’re all about. They allow each team rider to have their own signature series, so you get a wide range of styles and influences in every collection.

GET A KICK START ON MARCH! We have three bottles (that have been sitting tantalizingly on my desk for the past week!) of Bethenny Frankel’s Skinnygirl Margarita Mix and three copies of her new recipe book The Skinnygirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life that we’re giving away all week on twitter. If you’re not following us yet, now’s the time to start!

At the beginning of February, Kelly and Casey trekked over to the Prudential Center to interview the pseudo-housewife of our hearts Bethenny Frankel (don’t worry, Jill Zarin’s in there too), who was slingin’ Pepperidge Farm Deli Flats sammies to the passers-by. I don’t know if she had served pita bread to one homeless man too many or if homegirl’s comprehensive worldview is just really that repellent but she SHOT DOWN 80% of Kelly’s questions which is as hilarious as it is ballsy.

So, this got me thinking and now I am ENDLESSLY fascinated by this woman—she’s like this wondrous creature that exists to keep people like Simon and Alex McCord at bay and I’d stake my life on the fact that if the Housewives were Rappers she’d be Lil’ Wayne. Evidence: You’d have to be crazy to challenge her to a fight—look at those legs, girl is SCRAPPY; they’re both skinny minnies; they both have seen horrors we will never experience (seeing Alex and Simon, together, in any sort of romantic capacity and gang warfare, respectively) and deep, deep down in both of their muscular chests, there lies the soul of a poet.

Before immersing yourself in the Tao of Frankel remember: she’s not terse per se, Queen B is obviously just getting Shakespearean on us (“Brevity is the soul of wit”). Her tactic of masquerading brusque comments as actual answers is imploring us, as readers, to look for the deeper subtext of her words just like Weezy does.

B, never apologize for your concise and forceful nature. Being thug means never having to say you’re sorry. Weezy* taught us that. Check out the interview here.

xo heather

*Okay, I know that U-Turn said it in that episode of Weeds but you know that’s got to be Weezy’s mantra. Don’t fight me on this one.

INTERVIEW | BETHENNY FRANKEL

After having been everywhere from Atlanta to Miami to Chicago, Housewife of New York Bethenny Frankel, recently stopped by The Shops at the Prudential Center to pass out sandwiches created from recipes in her new book, Skinnygirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life. She took some time to speak to styleboston about everything from food to fashion to babies.

SB: When you aren’t being a “health foodie,” what do you indulge in?
BF: There’s no such thing as indulging for me. I have no hang-ups with food. No food noise here. I just eat what I want, when I want.
SB: What reality star would you love to cook for?
BF: I don’t like reality TV stars.
SB: Blog reader Andrea wants to know, did your eating habits change when the show became so successful and you had less time to cook?
BF: My eating habits have never changed. All my dishes take so little time to make. That’s what my book is all about; accessorizing what you already have to make a delicious meal.
SB: Have you ever considered opening a restaurant?
BF: I have considered it but it’s not in the cards right now. It wouldn’t be difficult. I’m just too busy.
SB: What are some of your favorite restaurants in Boston?
BF: Clio and Mistral.
SB: New York Fashion Week is next week (interview conducted 2/3). What show are you most looking forward to?
BF: Well, I’m walking in the Red Dress Fashion Show but I won’t really go to any shows unless my publicist sends me. I’m friendly with Badgley Mischka so I will go to her show but I don’t really follow fashion.
SB: If you could give our readers one health tip to live by, what would it be?
BF: There isn’t really just one tip to live by. But if I had to pick one, I would say your diet is your bank account.

EITHER OR…..
Eating out or cooking at home?
Boston baked beans or New England Clam Chowder?
Cooking for your girlfriends or cooking for Jason?
Watching the Jersey Shore or wearing fur? (rolls eyes) Neither!
A baby boy or a baby girl?
Housewives of New Jersey or Housewives of Orange County?
Skinnygirl Margarita or Skinnygirl Gin Julep?
Henri Bendel or Barney’s? Neither. I’m an Ebay sort of girl.

interview conducted by Casey Haight and Kelly Anderson

THE I-CAN'T-BELIEVE-THIS-IS-SERIOUS SERIOUS NEWS UPDATE

Life & Style hates individuality, gender-bending, and St. Angelina’s parenting.
Cool Runnings- Ice!

HEATHER: I don’t enjoy the Winter Olympics. There. I said it. All the people who’ve suffered through endless hours of Curling, Men’s Hockey, Women’s Hockey, Luging, Biathlon (ugh) YOU ARE NOT ALONE AND (HALF OF) THIS POST IS FOR YOU. To be fair, I got Chris Talanian to come in for the Olympiad lovers (whoever you are) and we’re here, together, to recount our favorite moments!

CHRIS: Now I’ll be the first to admit it, I haven’t been religiously watching the Olympics. Like most of America, I’ve been sleepily drifting in and out, watching Bob Costas scramble between events. Nonetheless, this year’s Olympiad was not without its thrills and chills.

#1 GETTING INSPIRED BY JOHNNY WEIR

Not only is Weir a parishioner of the Haus of Godga but his ice-dancing is unparalleled! Vim and Vigor wilt in the slick path of his sequined skates. And yeah, last week the medal was stolen from his beautifully manicured fingers but it’s about solidarity folks—Johnny Weir is pretty much the Diddy of the Ice Realm and remember, if we’ve learned anything this week, it’s that you can’t keep the crystal enchantress of the ice down for long. (H)

#1 WATCHING GRETCHEN BLEILER’S WARM-UP ROUTINE

You gotta love an athlete willing to be themselves in the spotlight. Obviously, she does it to stay loose, but watching Gretchen Bleiler go through her psych routine at the top of a pipe was definitely my favorite part of the Olympics. Boston would swoon when Nomar would religiously adjust his batting gloves before stepping up to the plate, and watching a talented female athlete do it, for me, was just that much more provocative. She didn’t medal this year, but definitely one of the most entertaining athletes on the slopes. (C)

#2 FANTASIZING ABOUT SNATCHING THE SOUL PATCH FROM APOLO OHNO’S FACE

Apolo! Why? You have such beautiful bone-structure and we love the DayQuil Ads, we really do but, homeboy, that piece got to GO. You’re not a member of Color Me Badd. I love your speed-skating suits and I love that you’re almost named after the Greco-Roman Sun God but right now you look like you need to be kept 20-50 ft away (at all times) from playgrounds. If you’re really having early ‘90s nostalgia go for the Dylan McKay look—hell, go for the Jordan Catalano, SHOOT FOR THE STARS! (H)

#2 USA MEN’S HOCKEY BEATS CANADA

I mean c’mon, even if you’re not a hockey fan (ahem, Heather), how can you not love Canada getting bitch-slapped in their home country in a sport THEY INVENTED! It’s like somebody beating the Swiss at making Swiss Army knives…in Switzerland! I was happy to see the Women’s team rebound last night, but I mean really?! Team USA beats Canada 5-3 at…hockey? No, that can’t happen (C)

#3 PLAYING SPOT THE DIFFERENCE

Seriously. (H)

#3 KIM YU-NA

Both of my roommates seem to have a thing for women’s solo figure skating. I was a pacifist in the war of the “quadruple-axles,” but after Kim Yu-Na’s performance last night, I’m a fan. There, I said it; I am a fan of women’s figure skating. If you had to see one routine in your lifetime, this was it. The announcer said, mid-routine, that it was the best she had ever seen in the Olympics. Making the 19-year old Yu-Na the greatest figure skater on the planet. Not only that, she brought home Korea’s first gold medal in figure skating…ever. When she took the ice before going into her performance you had a gut feeling something was up. The same feeling you felt when Curt took the mound in Game 7. Lights out, game over. (C)

Justin Burdon and Dan Fitzgerald from 652 Tremont Street’s South End Athletic Company (SEAC) tell all on how they established a retail space that reflects their personal style. When SEAC opened in October 2009, they kept in my mind how to make the shopping experience fun and unique. Here are some thoughts from co-owner, Dan Fitzgerald.

A SPACE WHERE PRESENTATION IS PARAMOUNT

Showcasing product. We choose what we buy carefully and have sought to create a venue that is clean and bright, allowing each piece to speak unencumbered. We also chose the black and white color scheme and track lighting for this reason. The shoe wall is made of wire and clear plexi-glass on a white backdrop to give each shoe its space. When there is considerable effort expended in the design of each shoe, it’s important to give each one the spotlight.

The Vibe. The store and the shopping experience should be fun.
Elements like the open traffic flow, the low tables, and the soundtrack, are designed to make people feel welcome, like they’re a part of something. The combination of the simple presentation elements, the product selection, and the vibe create an original environment for athletic retail.

The Logo. I designed the logo of the store to suggest a forward momentum. I like that simple connotation and its applications to life, to sport, and to fashion.

Inspiration. I really look up to what a store the like the Tannery does, particularly in the new stores. They carry such a depth and variety in the categories on which they focus. You know when you go there that you are seeing the best products by virtue of their presence in the store. Their brand is that powerful.

Parallels between individual style and interior space. My personal style is influenced by my interests in surfing, music, art, and fitness. I’ve enjoyed the trend toward slimmer fits in denim, classic vulcanized sneakers, and blank tees. I like to pick one element: be it a new pair of sneakers, a pair of jeans, or shirt, and build a look from that. It’s a look that is ready for anything can be dressed up or down with accessories, jackets, and layers. I love the minor details of a jacket or the subtlety in a fabric, so I’ll quietly complement those things in an outfit.
The store is a reflection of this simple personal style. The rack system was designed to give the product enough room for the details to come through. There is ample white space around the face outs for that reason. The same goes for our eyewear tower: each piece is in a lit box to make its own statement.

In the end, it’s all about fun. Our hope here is that it all comes together in a fun place to shop. If not for fun, why bother?

Showing hints of inspiration from the 1920’s, the look has a billowy and pleated top that makes for a statement with a skinnier fit below. When I first saw the look I immediately thought of Maggie Gyllenhaal in ‘Mona Lisa Smile’, one of my favorite movies when it comes to smart costume design. With an air of ‘feminine mystique’, their proper yet playful. Add a skinny belt, heels, and fitted top and you got yourself quite the ensemble.

+Meggie
